We are in Honduras! After a very long 48 hours (including 5 airports and 4 flights) we arrived to sticky hot San Pedro Sula and collapsed at a hotel for 2 days. We ventured out, just once to the mall and supermarket, and otherwise relaxed in the airconditioned room and the swimming pool. Maya coped remarkably well, even though she has never experienced heat and humidity like that in all her three years.
We thankfully left San Pedro Sula yesterday, travelling by bus to Copan Ruinas, which will be our base for the next month. We are renting a “vacation home” here- the “Casa de Don Santiago“, which is a lovely old colonial style 2-bedroom house. It is a beautiful, quiet and cool place to relax and Maya is enjoying having some space again.
We needed that space today. We went to find breakfast, and then to the market to get some fruit and veges for our kitchen. However we had forgotten that it is a holiday weekend here (independence day) and the town was packed with people, parades and lots of noise. It was all a bit overwhelming for Maya, especially after a week of new experiences and changed routines. She is currently curled up in her Dad’s arms having a wee sleep, and I’m sure she will wake up bouncy and ready for the next adventure very soon.
Over the next few weeks I will be doing some spanish study, and we hope to find a preschool that will allow Maya to visit for a while- or at least some Honduran friends- so that she can also learn more spanish. In October I will be attending the Conference on Honduras as part of my PhD research, and hope to follow that up with some visits and interviews. Later in October we will visit friends and family in Tegucigalpa and Danli, before flying back to NZ in early November. AS we travel, and as I have the time, I will try to keep this blog updated a bit more regularly than usual!
Here’s a couple of photos from the trip (Copan photos will come soon I’m sure!). As always check our photo album and Maya’s page for more.
